Fans from 16 secondary schools across the Thames Valley welcomed award-winning author Marcus Sedgwick to the Berkshire Education Library Service in Reading on 21st June. Marcus was shortlisted for the Carnegie Award for his compelling book Revolver which explores the question of whether violence is ever justifiable. The pupils were eager to hear about his latest work, White Crow, a modern Gothic horror story which is published in July.

Later in the week over 100 primary school pupils were delighted to meet illustrator Bruce Ingman at the Illustration Event. Bruce talked about his recent book Everybody was a Baby Once produced in collaboration with author/poet Allan Ahlberg and gave each child a handmade booklet to begin creating their own illustrated stories.

This year ELS ran the largest Shadowing programme in the country with 73 primary, special and secondary schools assessing the shortlisted books using the same criteria as the judges. Julia Garrett from St. Mary’s CE Primary School said that “Participating . . is seen as a powerful motivator and chance for children to contribute opinions and ideas with a real purpose.”
